Selenitic Age
Trying to find the definition of the word selenitic on the Internet is proof that even wordsmiths and people who edit dictionaries do half
assed work especially Lexic.us's frustratingly
recursive definition “Of or pertaining to selenitic; resembling or containing
selenite.” The best definition, describes it as “a variety of
gypsum, found in transparent crystals and foliated masses.” Methinks the age's name is referring to the towering crystals scattered among the age.
The Selenitic Age is the quintessential example of the
Myst’s bareness and most likely the reason the game is considered so soul-numbingly
lonely. Consider that when it was released, Myst was grouped into the same
genre as adventure games. King’s Quest and their ilk are packed with NPCs that
offer clues and story. Myst on the other had has a minimalist approach to emphasize the puzzles,
which is clearly understandable when dealing with a sound-based puzzle such as
the one in this Age. However, it would be a cute joke if I could point one of
the directional microphones at a group of people and listen in on their
conversation.
